The Importance of Omega-3 Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids, found naturally in krill, fish, nuts and other foods sources, are much talked about these days—and for good reason. To understand what’s behind the enthusiasm towards Omega-3 supplements we must take a closer look at two particular substances: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). You can simply refer to them as DHA and EPA, for short.

The importance of Omega-3 supplements is largely down to these two “essential fatty acids.” Fatty acids are critical for maintaining good health, particularly they provide fuel for your body’s many kinds of cells. Essential fatty acids, like DHA and EPA are just that: essential. This means that you must consume them from an external source as they are types of molecules your body cannot produce on its own. Since it is often difficult to get enough of these in our diet many are turning to supplements that include Omega-3 in their daily health regimen.

So what are the benefits of Omega-3 supplements containing DHA and EPA? Studies have shown that these Omega-3s can support heart health and support the maintenance of healthy trigyceride levels.
